Why San Francisco?
San Francisco has a long history of creators, those who came with dreams. The Golden Gate is emblematic of connection. The Pacific Ocean named “The Sea of Peace” offers a beautifully poetic narrative that harkens Carter’s call for peace, as he lead with such leadership and vision.
San Francisco has been called “The Golden City” because of the boom in 1949 of the gold rush. San Francisco became a city of treasure seekers. And now we have a new chapter because in our view, Carter sets the gold standard of leadership and so it’s time to honor him and shine a light again on this great city.
San Francisco carried history of peace: “Delegates of fifty nations met in San Francisco, California, USA, between 25 April and 26 June 1945 at the United Nations Conference on International Organization. Working on the Dumbarton Oaks proposals, the Yalta Agreement, and amendments proposed by various governments, the Conference agreed upon the Charter of the United Nations and the Statute of the new International Court of Justice. “ Link here
San Francisco held the Summer of Love, an extraordinary time of cultural shifting and questioning by young people across the nation, utilizing music and the arts to uplift and recreate. Carter was known as the last president of the “60s era.” The California Carter Initiative was founded on October 1, 2017, Carter’s 93rd birthday, which coincided with the final day of the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love. We gleen the good of this era and learn from the lessons it taught us about solidarity and peace, without violence.
Carter had expanded the Golden Gate National Recreational Area during his term as president, allowing the public great access and opportunity to enjoy natural lands without construction and privatization, protecting it for generations to come.
Statue of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter in San Francisco
The Vision:
A team of stakeholders and visionaries are growing to create a statue of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter along the waterfront in San Francisco to face the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean (the “sea of peace”). There are many reasons why San Francisco makes the perfect West Coast location for such a cultural and historical project that helps us remember our collective values of peace and human rights, just as The Carters who set the gold standard of leadership.
Supporters to date: The Consul General of the Kingdom of Cambodia has endorsed this project.
The Consul General of China has offered collaboration.
We are seeking funders, collaborators and more in order to erect a statue providing an international message in October 2028.
A Chinese American sculptor has been identified and will be revealed later.
